Today I see on my account there is a technician visit scheduled for May 7 to perform the upgrade. Is this visit really necessary since I just had recent hardware upgrades?

I presumed the upgrade would be done without the need for a truck roll. In certain cases it's probably best to have a tech out. Since it's Verizon that deems it necessary why bother about it. You did not say if internet is all you have? If you have tv or phone with internet it may be necessary for the truck roll.

It sounds like everything is in place for you too. Regardless, you can try to talk Verizon out of the tech visit. To follow up, a techician came by today, looked over my setup, and realized there was nothing he needed to do. So he went on to his next call. A firmware upgrade offers new features and security improvements. If you've had your wireless router for years, chances are there's a firmware upgrade you could and should perform.

However, unlike updating computer software, which you can usually do with a simple updater toolrouter firmware upgrades are not as easy to understand. One common reason as to why your router manufacturer may put out a firmware update is because they're trying to fix a vulnerability that was detected in the current firmware. It's similar to updating any device. When bugs are found and corrected, updated firmware is released so that users can actually implement those fixes.

Router manufacturers might also issue a firmware update to add new features to the router, such as parental control settings or IPv6 support. Not updating your firmware in this situation might leave you missing out on speed boosting upgrades that could improve the overall performance of the network.

Some routers upgrade their firmware automatically, but this is only the case for newer, "smart" routers such as some mesh network routers. If you've heard that your router needs a firmware upgrade but you have one of these newer routers, check the update log in the app to see if the update has already been applied.

Download the firmware file from a trusted source. Ideally, you'd get the firmware directly from the manufacturer's website. For example, if you were upgrading the firmware on a Linksys E routeryou'd visit its download page on Linksys' website to find the firmware download. If you download the firmware file from anywhere other than the manufacturer's official website, scan the file for malware just to be sure. It's extremely important to download the correct firmware file for the hardware version of your router.

If your router comes in various hardware versions, read the instructions on the download page to make sure you're picking the right file. Log in to the router's administrative console. Once you reach the router's login page, enter the password and username for the admin user. This is usually admin for the password, and the username can often be left blank if not admin or root.

Locate the firmware section in the router's settings.

This is often in an Advanced or Management part of the settings, but could really be anywhere since not all routers are the same. Now is a good time to double check that the router firmware version you downloaded in Step 1 is actually newer than the one your router is currently using.

Look for a firmware version number that you can compare to the one you downloaded. Some routers might have you plug a flash drive that contains the firmware file into an open USB port on the router, but others let you upgrade the firmware from the router's "website" like you see in Step 3.

Follow the steps given to you for your specific router. It should be fairly straightforward, but if you don't see the instructions on the web page, search the user manual. Do not interrupt the firmware installation. Avoid updating the router firmware if the power might suddenly go out, like during a storm, and definitely don't manually shut off the router during the upgrade. Reboot the router once the firmware has been fully applied.

This should happen automatically during the update procedure, but do it manually if it doesn't. Tweet Share Email. Fortunately, there aren't very many steps you have to take to update the router firmware. These are common default IP addresses for some of the more popular wireless router brands. Here are your broadband upgrade options, and the benefits you gain along the way. Author: Andy Betts. Is your internet getting you down with its slow speeds? Do you want to sign up to sport or movie channels? It's time to consider a broadband upgrade. There are plenty of good reasons why you should upgrade your broadband plan, including performance, price or convenience.

When deciding whether it's time to upgrade, ask yourself what you hope to gain by making the change. Most upgraders can be grouped into three main categories. The most obvious benefit to upgrading your broadband is that you can get a faster speed. This might mean a move from standard broadband to fibre, or from a basic fibre deal to something much faster. If you're still stuck on one of the old standard broadband packages, you might find it starting to struggle to keep up with your needs.

An upgrade is well overdue. You'll notice a night and day difference between standard broadband and fibre broadband. Downloads will be faster, browsing will be smoother and you won't get any buffering when you're streaming TV and movies.

You'll find your whole family will be more able to go online at the same time without it causing any slowdown. Superfast fibre broadband services are generally split into two groups. There's the basic deals with average speeds of around 36Mb, and faster plans of around 60Mb or so.

Verizon - your high speed internet service provider

The 36Mb option is a good starting point. Assuming you're getting close to that speed it can comfortably handle three or four people being on Netflix or YouTube at HD resolution at the same time, with others online, too.

The faster plan is better for larger or more demanding households, or if you want to watch Netflix in 4K. It also gives you a little bit of extra legroom, since our bandwidth requirements are only going to continue to rise. Already got fibre? You can, of course, upgrade from a 36Mb plan to a 60Mb one. You just need to check that you can get those faster speeds where you are. Not every property can, particularly in more rural areas. If you're really thirsting for speed, you have a growing number of options for something a whole lot faster.

These speeds remove the remaining limitations you might have on your internet use, including quality of media streaming and the number of people who can go online together. Upload speeds are also faster, which may help if you work from home. Your main option for this is with Virgin Media. Their plans up to Mb are widely available, and go faster still in some areas.

Should you not wish to switch to Virgin, or can't get their faster speeds where you live, similarly fast speeds are becoming much more widespread from providers that run on the Openreach network.

These use the G. BT, Sky, Vodafone and TalkTalk are among the providers that can offer plans of Mb or faster in areas where the technology has been rolled out. These have speeds pushing up towards 1Gb and give you almost instantaneous downloads and uploads. Vodafone are among the companies offering this, with their Gigafast plan delivering an average speed of Mb.
